History of Forest City Housing Co-operative Inc.

Forest City Housing Co-opeative Inc. was started in 1981 by a group of people joined together as a result of a small ad in the London Free Press.
The group called themselves a “core group” as a formal name had not yet been decided upon. The group applied to CMHC – Canadian Mortgage and Housing Corporation, for start up funding under the National Housing Authority. A study was submitted to CMHC and a grant was made to the group by CMHC. The name, Forest City Housing Co-operative was then chosen to identify the co-op.
The location of 200 Banbury Road, in South East London was chosen for the site on which to build and sod turning ceremonies were held in April 1983. The first model unit was opened in August 1983. Forest City Housing Co-op has 40 units in the complex, made up of 4 one bedroom, 10 two bedroom and 26 three bedroom townhomes, community house, an onsite laundry room and play area/basketball court.
